Welcome to this guide on attacking and defending in Rise of Kingdoms. If you’re feeling a bit confused about how combat works, or you just want to learn more and improve your skills, you’re in the right place. This guide takes a beginner-friendly approach to explain the basics of attacking, defending, and everything you need to know to get started in battles.
We will refer to these terms several times in this article, so here’s a breakdown of what they mean:
PVE: Player vs Environment (Fighting neutral units)
PVP: Player vs Player (Fighting other players)
Commander Active Skills
Firstly, lets talk commander skills. Every commander in the game has an active skill. This is their main ability and often the biggest source of damage. It takes 1000 rage to activate an active skill, but this can vary between certain commanders.
Tip: When building a commander, it’s a good idea to level their active skill to level 5 first. This will improve their damage output a lot more.
Active skills activate automatically during battle, as long as your commander is attacking another unit. Here’s how rage buildup works:
You can track a commander’s rage in the march tab by looking at their icon.
Rage is shown by 4 yellow dots.
Every time the commander attacks, the dots fill up.
When all 4 dots are full, the active skill is used and the rage bar resets.
Types of Attacks
There are 4 different types of attacks in Rise of Kingdoms. These include:
Normal Attacks: A normal attack is when you click or drag your troops to attack an enemy. When attacking neutral units like barbarians, normal attacks cost action points (AP). The amount of AP used depends on the level of the barbarian, usually ranging between 40 and 70 AP. Normal attacks are also used in PVP battles when you target enemy player units directly on the map.
Counterattacks: When your unit is struck by an enemy, they will automatically counter attack the enemy. You’ll generate rage from this by it’s best to target the enemy directly.
Rally & Alliance Building Attacks: Consists of multiple players units to create one big army. Used for attacking barbarian forts, lohar, alliance fortresses, flags and other players’ cities. The number of players that can join in a rally depends on the players castle level. Improving crystal technology can also add more space in rallies.
Reinforcement: Joining rallies that have already set off to provide more power. Effective when attacking alliance structures.
Note: When joining rallies that are targeting alliance buildings or player cities be prepared for huge loses and troop death. You may need a substantial amount of resources to recover from this.
How to Defend Your City
There may be times where your city comes under attack by other players. This is common during KVK seasons.
Defending in Rise of Kingdoms is fairly simple. You can garrison commanders to protect your city. Here’s how you do this:
- Tap on your wall in the city.
- Select the cog icon near the top.
- Set up your garrison plan to defend your city. It is best to use commanders that speciliase in garrison which can be identified by viewing the commander skills.
Tip: Set multiple garrison plans in-case your city comes under attack when your main garrison commanders are in the field. Ensure your wall durability is fully repaired as well.
Earning Kill Points
Kill points are earned by defeating enemy units during PVP battles. The higher the tier of the unit you kill, the more points you’ll earn. These kill points are displayed on your profile for other governors to see.
Here’s how many kill points you’ll get based on the troop tier you defeat:
T1 – 0.2 points
T2 – 2 points
T3 – 4 points
T4 – 10 points
T5 – 20 points
Attacking Tips
- It’s best to focus all your attacks on one enemy at a time. The more units you have attacking the same target, the bigger the damage bonus you’ll get.
- In PVP, drag your units away when targeted by other commanders. You’ll earn more kill points when not counter attacking.
- When Tier 5 units are unlocked, try attacking barbarian forts with only one other member of your alliance. This will maximise chests for the rest of the alliance.
Defending Tips
- In PVP, reinforcing alliance flags constantly can stop them from burning when under attack and help your alliance win KVK. Always follow alliance markers and be prepared for heavy losses when doing this.
- Try and ensure your best garrison commanders are always in your city to defend the walls.
Summary
That’s everything you need to know about the attacking and defending mechanics in Rise of Kingdoms to fight effectively. Put these tips to good use and earn lots of kill points. We wish you many successful victories!
