As your vault grows, space gets tight, and sometimes you’re left wondering: should I evict low-level or useless dwellers?
In Fallout Shelter, evicting dwellers is a common strategy, but is it a bad one? This guide explores the pros and cons of evicting, when to do it, and how it affects your vault’s overall health and happiness.
Fallout Shelter is available on multiple platforms, but this guide is written with mobile players in mind – whether you’re on Android or iOS.
How to Evict Dwellers in Fallout Shelter
You can evict Dwellers at any time. Here’s how:
1: Tap on the dweller
2: Drag them outside of the vault until you get a pop-up screen.
3: Tap the red icon at the bottom of the dweller profile.
4: Confirm when prompted.
The Dweller will leave the vault permanently and cannot be recovered.
Is Evicting Dwellers Bad?
Not necessarily. Evicting can actually be a smart vault management decision, especially in the mid-to-late game. But timing and intent matter.
When Evicting Is a Good Idea
Overcrowded vault: Too many Dwellers = more resource demand and incidents. Learn how to avoid shortages in our Fallout Shelter resource management guide.
Low SPECIAL stats: Evicting Dwellers with poor stats makes room for stronger, more efficient workers.
Useless offspring: If you’re breeding Dwellers just for numbers and they don’t have long-term value, it’s often better to remove them.
Unassigned Dwellers standing idle: They’re consuming food/water without contributing.
When You Should Avoid Evicting
Early game: Every dweller counts when you’re building up your early vault.
Quest-ready Dwellers: Accidentally evicting a geared or high-level dweller can set you back massively at the beginning. Exploring the wasteland and completing quests is a good way to build up early resources.
Note: Evicting too aggressively can cause population drops, which affect production and room availability.
Better Alternatives to Eviction
Before you evict someone, consider:
Reassigning them to a lower-priority room (e.g. Storage with high endurance outfit for happiness).
Training their SPECIAL stats over time to increase usefulness.
Equipping them with outfits to cover their weaknesses.
Sometimes a weak dweller can still fill gaps in less critical areas, especially if you don’t need to open new space immediately.
Summary
Evicting dwellers might feel cruel, but in Fallout Shelter, it’s sometimes the best move for improving your vault. When done properly, eviction helps control population, improves efficiency, and ensures your resources support only your most valuable residents.
