Bertrand is a legendary Mage hero in Call of Dragons, and if you’ve just unlocked him, you’re probably wondering how to build him. With a large choice of talents, artifacts, and skill paths to pick from, making the right choices can make a big difference to his performance on the battlefield.
Bertrand is only available through the Lucky Spin wheel, not from gold chests, so unlocking him will cost you some gems. Once you’ve pulled him from the wheel, you can then use universal hero tokens to level him up.
While he’s not fully free-to-play due to the gem cost up front, once unlocked, he becomes a reliable option for F2P players who manage their tokens wisely.
Bertrand specialises in single-target damage and is best used with flying celestial units due to him having the flying ability.
Best Bertrand Talent Tree Builds
The following talent tree setups are the best recommendations for Bertrand depending on how you want to use him.
Bertrand Skill Talent Tree
The skill talent tree build is useful for dealing large amounts of skill damage. There is plenty of rage regeneration and damage buffs to spam his active skill. Firstly, build towards Caged Animal in the skill branch then finish with Magic Maelstrom in the magic branch with the remaning skill points.
Bertrand Magic Talent Tree
The magic talent tree build is a good alternative if you want a wider variety of buffs, including DEF penetration. This build is more suitable for longer battles as Iconoclasm will output more damage the more Bertrand gains buff effects.
Best Bertrand Pairings
Bertrand can be paired with most other Magic heroes in Call of Dragons, but some combinations work better than others. Below is a list of hero pairings ranked from best to worst to help you find the most effective matchups. If you want to see how these heroes rank, check out our full Call of Dragons Hero tier list.
Tohar (Best Pairing)
The best pairing for Bertrand is Tohar. They were both released together and this usually indicates they make a good pairing. Tohar provides more skill damage and single-target damage so their synergy is really good.
This pairing easily earns a spot in our top 5 hero pairings in Call of Dragons.
Theia
A more accessible option for free-to-play players is Theia. Since she can be obtained from gold chests, it’s much easier to level up her skills compared to other heroes. Like Bertrand, Theia is also a flying hero, meaning that when paired together they can cross terrain with ease. This mobility makes them especially useful for gaining positional advantages in PvP.
Liliya
Liliya is another powerful mage hero that can be paired with Bertrand, but this is only if no other heroes are available. Their setups don’t syncronise perfectly, but this is a good backup option.
Velyn
Similar to Liliya, Velyn is a good backup pairing choice for Bertrand.
Best Artifacts for Bertrand
Below is a list of the best artifacts you can use with Bertrand to improve your PVP performance and increase your merits. Remember, the choice of artifact depends on your playstyle, the situation, and the role you want Bertrand to play. Each artifact has its own strengths, so consider them carefully. You can view the full list of artifacts here.
Mirage Orb
Mirage orb scales with skill damage and inflicts further damage on single targets, making it a good choice for Bertand.
Infernal Flame
Another artifact that improves magic damage. It would be better suited for Liliya, who inflicts scorch, but is a solid choice for Bertrand.
Phoenix Eye
An AOE artifact that also has a large magic damage output. Bertrand deals single target damage primarily, so Phoenix Eye is an option if you want to hit more targets (Up to 4 enemy legions).
Thunder Elegy
An artifact used for control situations as will silence enemies who are targetted by it. Another artifact that should be used for AOE purposes.
Magic Bomb
A more F2P friendly choice is magic bomb. This is easy to level up as it is an epic artifact and provides large magic damage output.
Bertrand Skill Levelling
In Call of Dragons, advancing a hero to higher star levels unlocks additional skills. When you spend hero tokens to improve these skills, the upgrades are assigned randomly rather than letting you choose where they go.
Note: You can now lock skills in place. However, if you skip skill 2 and try to focus on skill 3, upgrades will still be randomly split between the two. This system only works when the skill you want to prioritise comes before the one you want to skip.
If you’re building Bertrand for PvP, it’s recommended focusing on his first skill, Entitled Rage, and maxing it to level 5 before you use stars to unlock the rest. Once that’s done, you should at least get him to 5511, or 5551 as a minimum. His awakened version will increase his Golden Marks stacks damage, so it’s up to you if you do this.
